Income Tax Disclosure [Abstract] | |
Income Taxes | Income TaxesIncome tax expense during interim periods is based on our estimated annual effective income tax rate plus any discrete items that are recorded in the period in which they occur. Our tax rate is affected by discrete items that may occur in any given year but may not be consistent from year to year. Our effective tax rate was 26.6% and 25.8% for the three and six months ended June 30, 2022, respectively, and 19.6% and 17.6% for the three and six months ended June 30, 2021, respectively. The effective tax rate was higher for the three and six months ended June 30, 2022 compared to the same period of prior year primarily due to book expense in connection with the decline in value of our COLI assets in the period ended June 30, 2022 that was reversed for tax purposes as opposed to book income in the same period in 2021 |
