The Greater Washington Government Contractor Awards are presented in partnership by the Professional Services Council, the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce and Washington Technology. According to the selection committee, "Mr. Kendall is being recognized for his professional excellence, consistent track record of growth and success, and his history of extraordinary personal contributions to his community, company and industry."

"Every year, the nominees and finalists for this prestigious award offer a stark reminder of the great and important work that is being done in the region's government contracting community," said Fairfax County Chamber President & CEO Jim Corcoran. "It is an honor for us to salute them."

Kendall has served on the board of VSE since 2001, and was elected Chairman of the Board in May 2010. He also serves on the boards of i360, Inc., and Burdeshaw Associates, Ltd.

"We are delighted that our fellow board member and friend is being honored," said VSE CEO Maurice "Mo" Gauthier. "Cliff is the epitome of a family man, business leader and mentor, who, with his wife, provides scholarships to 45-50 deserving students attending our local colleges and universities. I can't think of a better candidate for this distinguished achievement."

Kendall earned his bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Maryland. After graduation, he received an ROTC commission and served in the Air Force. He earned his MBA at George Washington University and his early career included positions with Washington Gas Light Company; American University; Washington University (St. Louis), and Booz|Allen|Hamilton, Inc.

"In 1968, I was very fortunate to be one of a team of four that began Computer Data Systems, Inc. (CDSI)," recalled Kendall who later served as CEO for 21 years and 27 years as Chairman of the Board, until the merger with Affiliated Computer Services, Inc.

Mary Ann Mayhew, a former executive vice president of CDSI, served with Kendall for 18 years. "Cliff is a lifelong mentor and what I remember most while working with him is his leadership by ensuring constant learning in the work environment, focus on customers and commitment to open communications. What really impressed me is that he really did 'walk the talk.' For me personally, I was able to take advantage of one opportunity after another. While working in the marketing department, I went to law school at night and eventually headed the legal team. I think the world of him--he is a wonderful leader."

Kendall previously served on the board of directors of Washington Real Estate Trust, Affiliated Computer Services, Inc., and was Chairman of the Board of On-Site Sourcing, Inc. and Objective Communications, Inc. He is Past Chairman of The Technology Council of Maryland and served as Chairman of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, Chairman of the Montgomery/Prince Georges County CEO Roundtable, and member of the board of the Maryland Economic Development Commission. Mr. Kendall also previously served as director of the Montgomery County Community Foundation, which he founded and chaired.

"Since January of 1998, my wife and I decided to focus our energies on higher education," said Kendall. He currently is serving his eighth year as Chairman for the Board of Regents for the University System of Maryland. He is also on the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges Board of Directors. Previously, he was President of the Montgomery County Education Connection, and served on the Board of Trustees of George Washington University where he successfully chaired a fund raising effort to build the new GWU School of Business building. He continues to serve on the GWU Business School Advisory Board. He was an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University teaching the capstone course in their MBA program, and served on the Board of the Universities at Shady Grove.

"It is a great honor for me to be inducted into the Greater Washington Government Contractor Hall of Fame, particularly, because I know the caliber of the members previously inducted. They are a very impressive group and it is a privilege for me to be included," said Kendall.
