VSE Employees Receive Fourth Award in Afghanistan
Father-Son Duo Enjoy Supporting Soldiers in Theater
ALEXANDRIA, Va.-- VSE Corporation (Nasdaq GS: VSEC) proudly announced today that two special employees have received multiple citations for their dedicated service in Afghanistan.
Ricardo Martinez and son, Ricardo Martinez Jr., recently were recognized for their exemplary support by the U.S. Army Provincial Reconstruction Team in Kunar Province. This is the second time they have served together in a combat zone, initially while they were both active duty in Iraq in 2003.
"Both Ricardo Martinez, Sr. and Jr. perform exceptionally well in the field. They go above and beyond every day in their quest to ensure the war fighter's Counter Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Device Electronic Warfare (CREW) gear is fully operational and the soldiers are properly trained to engage the equipment. They are high caliber and it is my pleasure to work with them on this program," comments Shawn P. Marra, CSC Country Operations Manager.
Martinez, Sr. served 22 years as a Cannon Crew Member and retired as a First Sergeant. His deployments include Desert Storm, Desert Shield and Operation Iraqi Freedom. His son entered the military as a Signal Support Specialist in October 2002, before making a switch to Fire Support Specialist. He deployed twice to Baghdad, first in 2003 and again in 2005, during which time he had his first experience with the CREW systems.
Both came to VSE in 2008 to expand their technical abilities with CREW systems, and chose to immerse themselves in the real-world deployment and maintenance of the systems. "We enjoy the opportunity to help soldiers because they understand first-hand the needs and responsibilities of properly installed and deployed Electronic Countermeasure (ECM) systems," said Martinez, Sr. "The most rewarding aspect of our support is sharing our time and resources with the soldiers and ensuring they go home safely."
Fortunately, the VSE father-son team has strong support from their families. "Better together than apart," comments Martinez, Jr. "Our families respect our passion for helping soldiers. VSE has also gone out of its way to ensure we get everything we need in Kunar Province and we are confident knowing our families are well-taken care of at home."
"On behalf of the entire company, I would like to congratulate Messrs Martinez on this highly meaningful award," said Maurice "Mo" Gauthier, CEO of VSE. "VSE takes great pride in the fact that over forty percent of our workforce has served in the U.S. armed forces, and many of our employees, like Mr. Martinez Sr., received a significant portion of their career experience in the military. At a time when many returning veterans may be wondering "what's next" in their careers, VSE is committed to providing these brave service members the opportunity to continue serving their country as civilians in the private sector."
